Greenwich Observatory & Prime Meridian


It was quite a hike up the hill to the Observatory, but worth every step!
Of course, I bought books published by the Observatory so we could learn even more when we returned home.

We had a great time with the hands-on learning. Soon we got hungry and went to the patio over-looking the park. All I could think of was how badly I wanted to hop on a horse and ride, ride, ride.




We brought a picnic lunch and ate with our new friend, Mr. Squirrel. He would have taken another almond from our hand if he hadn't been frightened by the gardeners - darn.

Here we are standing on the Greenwich Meridian Line representing the Prime Meridian of the World with east to our right and west to our left – Longitude 0ยบ.

Every place on Earth is measured in terms of its distance east or west from the Greenwich Meridan. The line itself divides the eastern and western hemispheres of the Earth, just as the Equator divides the northern and southern hemispheres.

We had an awesome time, and our day wasn't over yet!

Greenwich Maritime Museum and The Queen's House

The Observatory, Queen's House, Maritime Museum, and more are all on the same incredibly expansive, green rolling hills as far as the eye can see, view of the Thames, wildlife walking free, gorgeous property.









This view of the Thames River is why Her Majesty the Queen did not want the last architectural piece to the Naval Academy built.
Did you know you never refer to Her Majesty the Queen with pronouns such as "her" or "she", but always "Her Majesty the Queen"?

Why Does Easter Alternate Between March and April?

Whilst exploring Greenwich, we found out why!

Algorithm

An algorithm to find the date of Easter which is valid from 1900 to 2099 has been derived by Carter.

Calculate D="'225'" - 11(Y MOD 19).

If D is greater than 50 then subtract multiples of 30 until the resulting new value of D is less than 51.

If D is greater than 48 subtract 1 from it.

Calculate E="'(Y" +' [Y/4] + D + 1) MOD 7. (NB Integer part of [Y/4])

Calculate Q="'D +'" 7 - E.

If Q is less than 32 then Easter is in March. If Q is greater than 31 then Q - 31 is its date in April.

For example, for 1998:
D = 225 - 11*(1998 MOD 19) = 225 - 11*3 = 192
D is greater than 50, therefore:
D = (192 - 5*30) = 42
E = (1998 + [1998/4] + 42 + 1) MOD 7="'2540'" MOD 7="'6'"
Q = 42 + 7 - 6="'43'"
